What is Military Time?

Military time is a 24-hour timekeeping system used widely in the United States by the armed forces, hospitals, emergency services, aviation, railroads, and other industries where clarity and precision matter.

Instead of using "AM" and "PM" like the traditional 12-hour clock, military time runs from 0000 to 2359. The day begins at midnight (0000) and ends at 2359 (11:59 PM). There is no repetition of hours, which helps prevent confusion.

For example:

  • 1:00 AM → 0100
  • 1:00 PM → 1300
  • 7:30 PM → 1930

How to Convert Military Time to Standard Time

Follow the steps below to convert military time to standard (12-hour) time:

Step 1: Look at the first two digits (the hour).

If the number is:

  • Between 0000 and 1159 → It's AM
  • Between 1200 and 2359 → It's PM

Step 2: Adjust the hour if needed.

  • If the hour is 13 or higher, subtract 12.
  • If the hour is 12, it stays 12 PM.
  • If the hour is 00, it becomes 12 AM.

Example 1: 0930

  • 09 is less than 12 → morning
  • Time = 9:30 AM

Example 2: 1400

  • 14 is greater than 12
  • 14 - 12 = 2
  • Time = 2:00 PM

Example 3: 1805

  • 18 - 12 = 6
  • Time = 6:05 PM

How to Convert Standard Time to Military Time

First, determine if the time is AM or PM and apply the following rules:

For AM times:

  • If between 1:00 AM and 9:59 AM, add a leading zero.
  • If 10:00 AM or 11:00 AM, keep as is.
  • If 12:00 AM, use 0000.

For PM times:

  • Add 12 to the hour (except for 12 PM).

Example 1: 7:15 AM

  • Add a leading zero.
  • 0715

Example 2: 11:45 AM

  • No change needed.
  • 1145

Example 3: 3:25 PM

  • 3 + 12 = 15
  • 1525
